In todays lesson Georgina and I came up with the concept for our main task and wrote out a 25 word pitch for it. We also began to develop a moodboard containing image, text and colour, which I then completed after school.

Our idea for the script is to begin the film with a teenage boy who has just been to the funeral of his girlfriend sitting under a tree in a deserted park. The title sequence will then be made up of a series of memories he has of their time together, all of which will be set in the same park and revolve around the area the tree is situated in. They will be spilt between two ages, one series of them while they were children; followed by a more recent series of them as teenagers. The sequence will then end with the boy returning to the reality that she is now dead.
Our inspiration for this storyline came from the Disney Pixar annimation film 'UP' which opens with the meeting of two children (Carl and Ellie) and then continues on to form a silent love story between the pair as they age together and eventually Ellie passes away. Since there is no dialogue, the makers rely heavily on sound and music to aid the audience in how they should feel and to create different atmospheres for every part of the sequence.

Georgina and I were unable to do our filming yesterday so we reschedualed and filmed all the footage for our preliminary task during the lesson today instead. We got all the clips we needed, however we're not sure the continuity is going to be quite accurate as we forgot to keep the amount of space the door was open etc. exactly the same.

In todays lesson Georgina and I sorted out the props for our preliminary task. This included making a mock plane ticket to go inside our package and deciding on a box to put it in.

We are going to do the filming in school during our free period 4 tomorrow.

In todays lesson Georgina and I finalised plans for our script and storyboard for our preliminary task, which I copied up in neat tonight.
Since the main aim of the preliminary task is for us to get used to the use of the cameras and to learn how to film and edit footage, we decided to keep dialogue and acting minimal so we could focus on the filming aspects instead. The concept simply shows and man walk up to a front door, deliver a package to the woman who answers the door, then we see her take the package inside and open it. While the concept is simple, we decided we wanted to experiment with the camera shots so we are using lots of changes in viewpoint throught the short clip.

In todays lesson I began writing my essay in which I compared and contrasted the four title sequences I have been analysing.
In the essay I used references to the sound, editing, cinematography and mise-en-scene and used screen shots of the title sequence to back up and accompany my points. I also ensured to refer to the ways the genres differ from one another in the type of opening they produce.

Sunday 22 January 2012

I have been looking at existing title sequences used in different film genres. I chose and analysed the ones from 'Casino Royale', 'Final Destination 3', 'The Little Mermaid' and '500 Days of Summer. I chose these films to use because they each represent contrasting genres of the film industry (action, thriller, childs fantasy and indie).

I watched each of the openings several times on YouTube and then recorded notes on the sound, cinematography, editing and mise-en-scene. I am going to use these notes to plan and write an essay comparing and contrasting the content of film openings used in different genres.

This week we began our looking at our coursework project, discussing and looking at title sequences featured in movies. We also started to brainstorm ideas, write scripts and create story boards for our priliminary task entitled 'The Package', in which we will be filming the first scene to a film surrounding the delivering of a package. For this we will focus more on the cinematography and editing of a scene.
